Illyria Design: T.O. style at Ottawa Fashion Week

By

First there was New York, then London and Paris, and now — Ottawa? That’s right. Our cousin to the east celebrated its third annual fashion week over the past weekend (so, it’s technically not a week, but who’s counting?). According to the Ottawa Citizen, over 2,000 Ottawans watched the show, which featured 18 international designers, both established and emerging, including Toronto’s Illyria Pestich, a graduate of Sheridan College. We break down Illyria Design’s Fall/Winter looks from the runway and where you can buy her feminine-mod clothing.

Coming Soon: Terroni Bar Centrale, Italian hustle and bustle in Rosedale

By

It wasn’t so long ago that popular Italian chain Terroni closed its Balmoral location, but a new one is opening up just down the street in a three-storey space at Rosedale’s Scrivener Square. Terroni Bar Centrale will occupy the ground floor and should open by April 1 at the latest, owners say, as a café/wine bar/restaurant. The upper floors will house a full-fledged restaurant, Terroni Price Street, expected to open this summer.

Toronto to get a dose of Charlie Sheen this April

By

When Charlie Sheen first announced his one-man show, My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is not an Option, he apparently had no plans to come to Canada. Well, things change fast for the tiger blood imbued. After his U.S. shows immediately sold out, the self-proclaimed warlock announced a new round of shows, including one at Massey Hall on April 14.

The Dressing Room: Double, Double, Toil and Cool

By

Since I first began my career in magazines, whenever I’m in production for an issue, I suffer from the rather peculiar illusion of having a Tom Thumb-sized narrator climb inside my ear and begin a relentless — siding on obsessive-compulsive — reciting of Alan Sillitoe’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. You might think it odd that production of a fashion and culture magazine would call to mind a story about a wayward youth who throws a race that could win him early release from his prison school; and you would be correct in thinking so.

Coming Soon: Sausage Partners, an ethical meat shop on Queen East

By

Sausage Partners hasn’t opened its doors yet, but anyone who’s eaten at Ceili Cottage may be familiar with its products already (hint: try the bangers and mash for a taste of the Naked Pig sausage). Ceili Cottage’s head chef Kyle Deming and his wife, Lorraine, are the masterminds behind Sausage Partners, which produces a variety of made-from-scratch pickles, preserves, meat products and yes, sausages. This summer, they’ll be branching out with a retail outlet of their own at Queen and Greenwood.

Hold tight: Guu Sakabar still awaits liquor license

By

As anyone familiar with the too-popular Asian restaurant chain knows, Guu and “waiting” are terms that can be used nearly interchangeably. And the same has been true with the upcoming opening of Guu SakaBar in the Annex. According to Eye Weekly, owners were hopeful that the place would open some time this week, but James Kim, a Guu general manager, tell us the restaurant is still waiting on its liquor license, which will come “hopefully soon.”
