Looks like local mallrats will have tons more space to shop and eat; they’ll just have to head a little north. Vaughan Mills announced today that it will undergo an $87-million expansion, which will add nearly 14,000 square metres to its structure, making way for 50 new stores.
Tuesday was a night of firsts. It was the first time The Last Bison, headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, trekked to Toronto; the first time I had ever seen somebody play a melodica (probably the coolest instrument ever), and – prove me wrong on this one – the first time a band was selling a custom made wooden yo-yo emblazoned with a bison for sale available at their merch table.
Greektown’s Aravind restaurant opened just over two years ago to a decent amount of critical acclaim, but the venue is apparently going to be replaced with a new concept. We weren’t immediately able to get in touch with Aravind’s owners, but new signs on the storefront indicate that Namaste Nepal, an Indian and Nepalese restaurant, is opening soon in Aravind’s spot. The space appears to be undergoing renovations.
Fraser Young is a comedian with a weird voice (he admits to this), which is probably the secret to his success (that, and his obsession with math jokes). First taking the stage back in 1995, Young has gone on to win the Tim Sims Encouragement Award and currently writes for George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight when he’s not touring. We caught up with the Toronto-based comic to chat about his first time on stage, memory pills and what’s so funny about math.
The Junction’s Playa Cabana Cantina has only been open for about a month, but already it’s quite clear that local residents have a thing for tacos — and tequila. With prohibition in the area essentially straddling an entire century, the formerly dry ’hood is now embracing its newfound status as a sundown destination.
For most of its 22-year history, Gravitypope had only been a fixture of the West Coast shopping scene — until now. With its first eastern Canada location opening in Toronto late last year at the foot of Ossington, this label-heavy boutique is the only Gravitypope outpost housing both clothing and footwear for men and women under the same roof.
Looks like that Parkdale moratorium isn’t only affecting new businesses. When Grand Electric started expanding into the second floor of its building last year, the last thing anyone expected was for the plans to come to a crashing halt. Now, thanks to the moratorium, the 40-seat expansion has been suspended.
Every Tuesday, we round up the best events from the city’s fashion scene. In this edition: a sale at one of Toronto’s best boutiques, Kate Spade New York launches at Yorkdale, an exhibition to ease the winter blues and more.
Jackie Kashian is a hilarious stand up comedian and a pretty serious dork. Her act (which she’s been perfecting for over fifteen years) is both biting and relatable. She’s also host of the The Dork Forest, a podcast where fellow comedians and other non-funny folk can talk about their most prized dorkdoms. We chatted with the comedian about her favourite guests, what makes people a dork, and why she hates wicker.
Celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, the man behind Café Boulud in Yorkville’s Four Seasons hotel, is releasing his very own single malt Scotch whisky in collaboration with The Dalmore. The beverage marks the first time a “bespoke” single malt Scotch whisky has been created with a Michelin-starred chef.
