Sansotei Ramen heads to Yonge and Bloor

By

Over the past year, Toronto’s ramen scene has been steaming hot (both literally and figuratively). And now one of the leaders of the pack is set to expand. Sansotei Ramen, which opened on Dundas a little over a year ago, announced an upcoming location on its Facebook page earlier this week. The new Sansotei is expected to open this winter at 650 Yonge St., just south of Bloor.

Chef Susur Lee is taking on New York City — again

By

Celebrated Toronto chef Susur Lee is taking a second crack at the Big Apple. According to a press release, he will be running an upcoming restaurant at the new One World Trade Center. The restaurant’s name has yet to be revealed, but it will serve modern Chinese food, and it will be part of a members-only club on the building’s 66th floor (which means dashed hopes for the general public).

First Draught: an Oktoberfest beer from Mill Street

By

In recommending a beer for Oktoberfest last year, I dealt with the confusing fact that the festival happens mostly in September. This year, let’s consider that the traditional style of beer for the Bavarian booze-up is Märzen, or “March beer.”

Kitchen Confidential: a lighter take on Crack Pie

By

Milk Bar, the bakery branch of David Chang’s Momofuku, focuses on home-style desserts. These sinful but oh-so-good sweets are made fresh daily and shipped in from Brooklyn. Crack Pie is the most delicious and greatest culprit — after one bite, you’ll understand the name! You just have to have more. A full 764 g pie comes in at 3,708 calories, with a whopping 223.2 grams of fat. Make it a very special treat!

Shop Talk: Mulberry opens a standalone store in Yorkville

Opened early last month, Mulberry is the latest high-end retailer to join the Yorkville neighbourhood. While the brand also opened a spot at the Yorkdale shopping centre last month, the Bloor location is Mulberry’s first standalone store in Canada.

Drink This: the pina colada from Julie’s Cuban

By

Hiding out among Dovercourt’s hodgepodge of houses, Julie’s Cuban is a wonderful little neighbourhood find. Those lucky enough to stumble upon it after sunset can’t help but be enchanted by the glow of the twinkly lights beckoning from inside. There, against a backdrop of Cuban beats and a wall heaving with tchotchkes, locals tuck into fresh ceviche or arroz and frijoles, dreaming of Havana.

Suzuki: think twice before flicking that next butt

By

Not long ago, dining out, going for a drink, working in an office, riding an airplane or intercity bus, and going to a movie meant being subjected to second-hand smoke. Cigarette smoking was a fact of life, and smokers were everywhere — indoors and out.

Wanted: this lambskin jacket from Beaufille

By

Any fashion enthusiast worth his/her salt is likely to be a expert in contrasts — not just between black and white (a trend that is still going strong this season), but also between modern and vintage, preppy and urban, soft and hard, conservative and sexy, feminine and masculine… the list goes on.
