March break is right around the corner — so are the Junos. And you know what that means? Snacks, snacks, and more snacks. Whether it’s at movie theatres, malls or friends’ homes, junk food abounds. Here are some great-tasting healthy March munching alternatives.
Here in Toronto, being a vegetarian is akin to wearing of a badge of honour: it grants the practitioner a distinct upper rung in the echelons of morality. Who would dare question the inherent righteousness of such a choice? Obviously, many, but the latest is the New York Times, which has just pointed out that, hey, plants don’t like being chopped up, cooked and eaten any more than other, cuter animals do.
While Toronto has a strange tendency to fall into conniptions at the prospect of a NYC institution making its way here, we do, in fact, have at least one cool venue of our own. Well, at least according to CNN. In its list of the 15 best hotel bars in the world, The Drake Hotel, of all places, got a mention for its rooftop patio, Sky Yard.
Well, we know that Momofuku is going to be bringing its signature pork buns to Toronto, and now we know something else: Toronto’s the Design Agency will be involved in designing the upcoming restaurants. Following this tweet from Rock-it Promotions, we got in touch with Matthew Davis, a principal designer at the Design Agency, who confirmed the company will be working on the Toronto design, but didn’t divulge any details beyond that.
For Diana Gomez, setting up a Mexican restaurant in Toronto is a dream come true. “I’ve spent all my life in restaurants,” she says. “Everybody’s been telling me to start my own restaurant here.” Simply Mexican, which is set to open near Yonge and St. Clair in the next few weeks, will serve the same traditional fare that Gomez’s family in Mexico has eaten for generations.
Here at Post City, we don’t comment on just any random pop culture phenomenon, but when Charlie Sheen gets a cooking show, we can’t resist. Ok, so it’s not really a new cooking show. It’s a parody on Funnyordie.com, where an egotistical, chain-smoking, knife-wielding Sheen in a tiger-print chef’s hat shows us his chops around the kitchen.
The L.A. Times once dubbed it “the progenitor of the haute cupcake craze,” and now Sprinkles Cupcakes, a bakery chain from Beverly Hills, is set to make its way to Toronto. But The Cupcake Shoppe doesn’t have to hold on to its hat just yet: details of the upcoming location are sketchy at best.
Renowned Vancouver chef Vikram Vij made his way to Toronto yesterday to celebrate the recent rebirth of All the Best Fine Foods and to promote his line of cook-at-home vegetarian meals available there. We took the chance to chat with him about dining in Toronto, the joys of snacking and his award-winning cookbooks, co-written with his wife.
If recent predictions are right, the future of food on Earth is looking rather dismal: predatory fish are on the verge of extinction, as are wild oysters – in fact, the planet could be on the verge of running out of food by 2050. One potential ally, reports Wired Magazine, could lie in a small, red berry that was responsible for “flavour-tripping” parties that were quasi-en vogue in Toronto a couple of years ago: miracle fruit.
We’ve gotten so used to hearing about indie coffee shops opening up downtown that it just doesn’t seem right to be reporting the opposite, but its true: a few months after setting up shop in Design Republic, Queen West’s incarnation of Lit Espresso Bar closed down with next to no warning on Friday.
Toronto’s Twitter-mill was on overdrive this morning when rumours surfaced that David Chang, chef and owner of New York’s Momofuku restaurant group, could be making his way to Toronto by 2012. Well, we didn’t have to wait until Monday to find out. A Momofuku spokesperson confirmed the speculation Friday night that not one, but two Momofuku restaurants will be opening in Toronto by 2012.
